We children of modernity, children of the screen, don’t even get the benefit of evil geniuses anymore. The great evils of our day are committed by total imbeciles, bungling us into endless conflict because they don’t know how else to behave. They have an animal cunning untempered by anything that would be considered “cultured”, and so we get a debased and ignorant evil, devoid of elegance or learning. We are born Neanderthals, and only through a certain type of learning do we become human. But most never become fully human because real learning is practiced almost nowhere. And so we’re pulled this way and that by intellectual knuckle-draggers, too stupid to consider cause and effect, or the long-term consequences of their actions.
