What would someone like her do if they knew they could get away with? It’s a thought experiment that we should apply more often to these people. You can judge someone by how much they wriggle and squirm under current legal restrictions. Are they constantly pushing for more power, interpretations of the law that allow for something even as extreme as removing the leading candidate from the ballot? Are they someone who appears ready to nullify the rights of millions of people, or imprison their political opponents, because they don’t have the maturity to accept the results of a free election? I look at this person and I see someone who would be perfectly at home as a functionary in a totalitarian government, signing the death warrants of the “enemies of the state”.
We laugh when we see their tantrums, but we must remember what they are, and understand that this is why we limit the power of government. Totalitarianism is in our DNA, it lies in wait for our higher selves to falter.
